Extracavity
Attenuators - Manual
The extracavity attenuator is a polarization based
device used to continuously vary the output power of a laser from a
very low level to maximum. Two rotating polarizing elements are used.
One is fixed to the predominant laser polarization plane while the
other is manually rotated about the beam axis. The standard attenuator
uses two calcite polarizers, and has a contrast ratio >1000:1.
The waveplate version uses a calcite polarizer as the output polarizer
(analyzer), and a waveplate as the input. This version has the
advantage of zero beam walk-off, but has a lower (100:1) contrast
ratio. All optical elements are supplied A/R coated for either 1064 nm
or 532 nm, and typical insertion loss is <15% with a well
polarized beam.

Extracavity
Attenuator, Cable Driven
This version of the extracavity attenuator is
available in the same operating modes as described above, but is driven
by a flexible cable to allow remote operation from the exterior of a
CDRH class I laser safety enclosure without opening the cover.

Extracavity
Attenuator, Motorized
This version of the extracavity attenuator
is motor driven to allow remote power control via computer. The stepper
drive motor allows precise rotational control of the variable
polarizing element, allowing extremely accurate power control. Stepper
motor drive electronics with manual jog control and external input
connector for pulse and direction control are standard.
Computer interfaces, such as IEEE-488 and RS 232, are available as
options.
