U.S. Laser offers a line of shutters
designed to either block or deflect laser beams. All shutters are
electromechanically actuated, and are designed for fail-safe operation,
where the shutter closes by gravity in case of solenoid failure.

Shutter Assemblies
U.S. Laser safety shutters feature a rotary
solenoid actuated stainless steel flag, and are designed for
intracavity use. The housing is fabricated from aluminum, and black
anodized. The assembly includes an emission eminent warning light, and
is conveniently wired to a five pin Switchcraft connector. Shutter
assemblies come mounted on a standard U.S. Laser carriage mount but can
also be supplied plate mounted by adding "-P" to the part no.

High
Power Shutter with Mirror Mount
Features a completely redesigned shutter
assembly for use with high power lasers. All electrical wiring is
isolated from the beam area, and the shutter is repositioned to provide
additional cover clearance. This shutter also has a high temperature
silicone rubber dust seal which will withstand temperatures to over 400
°F. The shutter is directly compatible with all existing high power
shutter/mirror mount assemblies, and is now shipped as standard
equipment on all USL high power systems.

Beam
Deflection/Gating Shutter Assemblies
Low Power Beam Dump Shutter Assemblies
These compact beam deflection shutters
are designed to be used extracavity to deflect or redirect laser beams
up to 12mm diameter into a suitable absorber or power detector. The
model 1031-1 is supplied with a gold plated copper shutter flag that
reflects >95% at wavelengths .7 to 20 microns. This flag is
mounted at 45° to deflect the beam downward into an absorber or power
detector. Model 1031-2 dump shutters are supplied with a dielectrically
coated dichroic mirror designed to fully reflect 1.06 and .532 microns.
To check the availability of mirrors coated at other wavelengths,
contact the U.S. Laser
Corp sales dept. Beam deflection shutters are supplied on a
U.S. Laser carriage mount. For plate mounting instead of carriage
mount, add "-P" to P/N.
Typical transition times for these
shutters are ≈10ms to open and ≈10ms to close when driven with the U.S.
Laser Corp shutter drive electronics.

Moderate/High
Power Beam Dump Shutters
|
This heavy duty series of beam dump
shutters is designed for use with high power continuous and pulsed
lasers in the range of 100 watts to <1 KW and beam diameters up
to 20mm. Functionally, the beam dump shutter is placed extracavity, in
the beam path . When the shutter is de-activated, the incoming laser
beam is deflected 90°. When voltage is applied to the solenoid, it
rotates the mirror out of the beam path, fully transmitting the
incoming laser beam.
To accommodate a range of
applications, the reflector mirror is available in three different
configurations, each of which will easily accommodate beam diameters of
up to 20 mm.. A gold plated copper arm is available for use at lower
power levels. This mirror has a reflectivity of > 95% at
wavelengths from .7 to 20 microns, and is a lower cost alternative to
dielectrically coated mirrors. The second version uses a highly damage
resistant dielectrically coated fused silica mirror, and is coated to
reflect >99% of the incident 1064 nm beam. The third version
uses the same dielectrically coated mirror, with the addition of an
optical filter designed to transmit visible light while blocking any
1064 nm laser light leakage. This version is designed to be used with
high power 1064 nm lasers which are equipped with integral visible
spotting lasers. For pricing and availability of dielectrically coated
mirrors for use at wavelengths other than 1064 nm, please consult our
sales department. The shutter mirror is actuated by a heavy duty 24
volt DC solenoid, and is equipped with an emission light, and a shutter
position interlock switch. The deflected beam is designed to be
absorbed by either a continuous duty water cooled absorber (see part no
1039), or a high power detector assembly (see part no 1036), both of
which are listed in the power meter section of this catalog, and are
sold separately.

High
Power Beam Dump Shutter with Absorber
Specifically designed for use with high power C.W.
Nd:YAG lasers operating at 1 KW and above, they provide an efficient
way of extracavity shuttering the beam and deflecting it into an
absorber designed to fully dissipate the power. The beam is deflected
by a highly damage resistant dielectrically coated fused silica mirror
which is designed to reflect >99.5% of the incident 1064 nm
beam. The mirror is actuated by a heavy duty 24 volt D.C. solenoid. In
operation, with no power applied, the incoming laser beam is deflected
into the highly efficient water cooled absorber. When power is applied
, the shutter mirror reacts, activating a shutter position switch, and
allowing the beam to pass through unrestricted. The high power dump
shutter can accommodate beams up to 19 mm diameter, and requires a
minimum of 3 g.p.m. of tap or chiller water for cooling. For further
details, contact U.S. Laser sales department.

SAFETY
SHUTTER/DUMP SHUTTER POWER SUPPLY CONTROLLER:
This power supply controller provides power and an
activation interface to control USL safety shutters and dump
shutters. Control can be accomplished either by a TTL computer
interface or manually via front panel switch or external contact
closure. The power supply operates off of 115 VAC with a 3 prong
grounded plug. An overseas version is available with 220 VAC and a
European plug. Both models operate at either 50 or 60 Hz. The
controller output is 24 V DC to the shutter but has a higher
voltage shaped turn-on pulse to increase the shutter activation speed,
which is nominally 20 to 80 milliseconds depending on the type of
shutter being driven. Shutter cable is included with power supply
controller ( N8022-1, -2, -3 and -4)

BEAM
DUMP ABSORBERS:
Beam dumps are used to absorb the power emitted by
lasers. Two types are available, air cooled, for use with lower powered
lasers, and water cooled, for use with higher powered lasers at higher
duty cycles. When used with a switching or deflecting device, these
absorbers can be a very effective extracavity shutter mechanism (also
called a dump shutter). Beam dumps can also be used in the lab as an
absorber when performing beam diagnostics. The model 1039-1 and -2
absorbers are recommended to be used with the model 1031-1 beam dump
shutters. The model 1039-3 and -4 absorbers are recommended to be used
with the model 1031-3 thru 1031-5 beam dump shutters. Our sales
department would be happy to assist in selecting the correct
absorber/shutter combination.
