Acousto-Optic Q-switches
The AO Q-switch is an optical device consisting of an A/R coated fused silica cell which has an integral acoustic transducer. The unit is water cooled, and is driven by a separate RF drive source. When modulated RF power is applied to the Q-switch, the intracavity laser beam is deflected, causing substantial loss of cavity gain. During this time the laser continues to store energy. When the RF drive is removed, the cavity returns to the high gain condition, and a short duration pulse is achieved. When properly used, the Q-switch is capable of fully holding off 50-100 watts of laser power. It is highly recommended that the Q-switch be mounted on a 2 axis kinematically adjustable mount such as Model N1009, which is shown below. For help in selecting the correct Q-switch, or for further technical information, contact the U.S. Laser sales department.
